Anderson County Museum

The award winning and admission free Anderson County Museum has more than 12,000 square feet of gallery space. Throughout 11 permanent exhibits and rotating temporary exhibits, the history of Anderson County is presented via genuine artifacts and photos. Each exhibit also includes interactive displays and games for children with several scavenger hunts and prizes available for all ages. Our exhibits are created to address South Carolina Social Studies standards for each grade level, making this museum the perfect spot for a field trip or tour. More information and booking for tours and school groups can be found at andersoncountymuseum.org/visit.

Our facility houses more than 25,000 artifacts and we have photographed and cataloged nearly 20,000. Our Roper Research Room (open on Tuesdays from 1-7 PM or by appointment with our curator) was created to make our collection accessible to researchers. For long distance researchers, we have also published a portion of our collection online at andersoncountysc.pastperfectonline.com. For more about our Roper Research Room and online collection visit us at andersoncountymuseum.org/research.

Our museum is also a popular hub for the surrounding community, hosting 99 events in the last year. Events are always open to the public unless otherwise specified and vary from dances, exhibit openings, and book signings to history programs, character days, gaming tournaments, craft parties, and the list goes on. The majority of these events are completely free, including parking, admission, crafts, games, prizes, photos, and more. We also offer six educational programs each month that are free and open to the public. For children, these are the Preschool Hour, Dinosaur Club, and American Girl Club. For adults, we have Heritage & History, Coloring for Adults, and Director’s Tea & Coffee. All of our upcoming events can be found at andersoncountymuseum.org/calendar.

Our gallery is open Tuesday from 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM, and Wednesday – Saturday from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. We have free admission, free parking, and accessible facilities. Donations are accepted to continue our free events and programs. Any proceeds from events benefit our exhibits and educational programs. Also, do not forget to leave with a souvenir or gift from our museum store, Whitner’s Mercantile!
