Since 1997, the Virginia Arts Festival has brought world-renowned performers to historic, recreation-rich coastal Virginia. The spring 2020 season brings the beautiful Hong Kong Ballet in a spectacular production of a treasured childhood classic, ALICE (in Wonderland), April 17-19; with stunning dancing, brilliant costumes and eye-popping stagecraft, the beloved characters of Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Red Queen and more leap to life. The hairy-chested stars of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo tower on toe shoes in a hilarious sendup of the great Russian ballets, April 29.
On May 4, hear the Kingdom Choir, the gospel group who brought the house down at Prince Harry’s royal wedding. The legendary Mark Morris Dance Company celebrates the Beatles in a day-glo dream of a show, Pepperland, May 8. Celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday with a star-studded concert with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, led by acclaimed conductor JoAnn Falletta and featuring Van Cliburn Gold Medalist pianis Olga Kern, May 15-17. On May 31, experience a moving concert version of Victory at Sea, the landmark World War II television series with its soaring score by Broadway legend Richard Rodgers, with Virginia Symphony Orchestra led by acclaimed Broadway music director Rob Fisher.
One of the highlights of the Virginia Arts Festival each spring is the Virginia International Tattoo, the largest celebration of music and might in the United States, with more than 1,000 performers from around the world, including pipe and drum corps, military bands, drill teams, Highland dancers, singers, and more—and this year the theme of the Greatest Generation celebrates the world-changing heroism of the men and women who served in World War II.
