Henderson and Vance County share Kerr Lake, its largest attraction, with Virginia’s southern border. Kerr Lake is the largest man-made lake east of the Mississippi River and one of the top bass fishing lakes in the Southeast. The lake covers 50,000 acres and has over 850 miles of shoreline. Kerr Lake State Recreation Areas include seven campgrounds with over 600 campsites. In addition to fishing and camping, visitors can enjoy boating, skiing, swimming, hiking, picnicking and bird watching. There are two marinas and numerous boat ramps for easy access to the lake. The marinas offer fishing equipment, snacks, beverages, pontoon boat and kayak rentals, fuel, repairs, and more. Annual visitation of over 1 million makes it one of the most visited state parks in North Carolina.
Other local attractions include the McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center and the Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre. McGregor Hall offers everything from summer theatre productions to concert tours and national Broadway touring shows. The Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre, located just outside of Henderson, is a family-friendly drive-in that opened in 1949. It is presently the oldest operating drive-in and one of only six remaining in the state.

Henderson is also home to the Show, Shine, Shag & Dine, an antique and classic car show held each year in October. We line the streets of the historic district with hundreds of vintage cars (1988 and older) covering a ten-block area. View beautiful pieces of original automobile history and painstaking restorations. In addition to antique and classic cars, the show is open to all makes and models and attracts hot-rods, muscle cars, rat rods, trucks, and nostalgia drag cars. The event is celebrating its 19th year and has grown to be one of the largest shows of its kind in the region.
Henderson is located adjacent to I-85 and US 1 in North Central NC. The location provides a rural lifestyle yet is within a reasonable drive to many major cities. The nearby cities of Raleigh and Durham, including RDU International Airport, are accessible within a forty-five-minute drive of Henderson.
